unable to connect with USB cord topic

my sister in law asked me to factory reset her phone and update it to the most recent available for her sgh-t989 however it will not connect to either my desktop or my laptop (both running win 8) I've tried all the official drivers I can find...and I cant even get it into download mode to see if odin will connect

no update (rooting/custom recovery ect) have been done shes on 2.3.4 gingerbread.

any Ideas?
