Google profile image in locks screen/notification bar topic

so i have a profile image set in google that shows up in hangouts etc. the way its supposed to

now on android lollipop, i'm on 5.0.1, in the lock screen and the notification drop down menu you have a profile image on the top right corner. how do you get this one to show the actual google profile image you set? i know you can manually choose it, buy why doesnt it just show the one you have set in google?

there was a workaround i used when i was on stock 5.0.1, but i cant remember what it was. any hints?
