Buffering on smb shares topic

The other nite I put cm 11 on kfhd. I put kodi helix 14 on it and it buffers on network smb shares. That doesn't happen with my other devices so I'm sure it's not a network issue. Any suggestions or if it doesn't involve advanced settings or hardware acceleration... can someone recommend a different build?
***btw--with the help of another xda member I got cm but couldn't flash twrp 2.8 I was able to flash cm but I have twrp 2.6.3.1
Is it possible to flash cm 12 with this recovery? Another question--is the upgrade worth it?
