What exactly is wrong with asking for an ETA? topic

A contributor or dev posts a ROM and many people download and flash it. The ROM is solid yet has a few bugs. The Dev responds to comments about these bugs and says they will be fixed in the next release. For the benefit of the doubt let's say a few weeks go by and the Dev volunteers info about this ROM but says a release isn't ready yet. Fair enough. A few more weeks go by with no mention of a release. Why is asking for an ETA frowned upon in this, albeit rare, situation?

The go to response is "these guys do this on their own time. They aren't being paid. How dare you even assume to think that you deserve any sort of progress update". I get it, but my point is, the Dev posts a ROM for it to be used by the people and to get offended because someone asks for an ETA is kind of ridiculous to me. If the Dev was doing it for just himself he wouldn't post it on the forum and I'm saying that making the ROM public comes with a few caveats. Like maybe some people have an Interest in progress.

Full disclosure: I've been an xda user for a long time and I've seen many people needlessly get their heads bitten off for asking for an ETA. I want to ask for an ETA in a thread and I'm afraid of the stupid backlash.

Maybe this goes in the general section. I'm not sure. I am technically asking a question.
