Can't root after fixing boot loop problem topic

I did the simple one click root a long time ago (2012) and in late 2013 or early 2014 I came home to my tablet doing the acer splash screen loop. I dont remember exactly the method I used to fix it but it involved me flashing the tablet with my PC with a different rom or image or whatever. Now its 2015 and I dug out the tablet to try and root it again and I am unable to root it using any of the simple methods I have found. When I look at the details of the root install it states the files already exist and then reboots and says that the root was successful when in fact root check says its not rooted and none of the root programs are installed. I thought maybe I can update the tablet at least but sadly and weirdly it says that my network coverage is bad. (dont know what network coverage has to do with anything considering its on wifi)

Any help would be greatly appreciated. good or bad I will appreciate it.
